What is mareish?

I love blogs. I’ve been reading them consistently since college almost daily. I know the trend is more video based (now more than ever, with reels or tik toks of 30 seconds maximum) but I love the written word. Reading, writing, expressing thoughts as they come to you and reflecting on the ideas of others.

So, what is mareish? Although it’s not technically a word in the dictionary, it is a term used in the equestrian world. I grew up riding horses from childhood well into high school, and mareish could be used to negatively describe a mare’s (female horse’s) undesirable behavior. Think nipping at another horse, swishing tail, ears pinned, etc. It’s like the horse equivalent to catty. I find these terms sexist. After all, there’s not a term called “stallionish” to negatively describe male horse behavior.

I’d like to work to redefine mareish. Similar to how we are working to redefine “run like a girl” or “throw like a girl.” With strength, integrity, and passion.

On this blog, I’ll be writing about the things that interest me as a busy woman. Some topics will be related to motherhood, as I have two sons: a 2 year old (who I’ll call D) and a 6 month old (who I’ll refer to as L.) Some content will be related to being a working mom. Other content will be relevant to any human. You can expect to see posts about planning (one of my passions), personal finance, systems and organization to manage the home and your time, and more. Above all, I am committed to researching anything I write and provide credible sources. There’s enough misinformation about there and I will do my best not to contribute. Although I do not have formal education in psychology (except one undergrad class), it is one of my interests and I plan on learning more about how it relates to all of these topics and sharing what I learn.

They say write about what you know. I agree to an extent. I’m not going to write a blog about living in France; that would be absurd and completely inaccurate. But I also strongly believe in being a life-long learner. Therefore I’m not going to limit myself to writing only about what I already have knowledge in. There’s a vast world of information out there, and I’m so excited to get started and take you along with me. To start out, you can expect 2 blog posts a week here on mareish, published each Monday and Friday. See you soon!
